The Honorable Joseph J. Carmody is a graduate of East Stroudsburg University and the Western New England School of Law. He was admitted to the practice of law in Pennsylvania in 1976 and has served as Assistant Attorney General with the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue in Harrisburg, taught law as an instructor at Lackawanna Junior College and prior to his election to the bench as Magisterial District Judge, he served as First Assistant District Attorney of Luzerne County. He is also a board member of the Commission on Economic Opportunity.

As a Magisterial District Judge, Judge Carmody has volunteered for the Luzerne County Drug Treatment Court serving as alternate Judge and a member of the team since its inception in 2005. He has also been selected and serves on a committee formed by the Administrative Offices of Pennsylvania Courts to recommend policy and procedures to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court about the role of Magisterial District Judges serving in Specialty Courts.

Judge Carmody is the son of the late Joseph and Jule Carmody. He has resided in West Pittston for over 50 years and is married to the former Catherine Sowa. They are the proud parents of five children, Joseph, Christopher, Matthew, Sarah Salvo and Michael; and four grandchildren, Owen, Colin, Daniel and Ella Carmody.
