Joseph J. Joyce

Matthew J. Carmody is a founding shareholder of the firm.  Mr. Carmody’s practice includes civil litigation in Federal and State Courts, with a concentration in civil rights matters.  Mr. Carmody has represented and successfully defended both local government agencies and individual government officials in various Constitutional law claims.  Mr. Carmody’s litigation experience also includes practicing before Federal and State Courts, Mediators, Worker’s Compensation and Unemployment Compensation Administrative law courts in various civil, commercial, employment and labor matters.  Mr. Carmody has also served as solicitor for numerous municipalities in Luzerne County.

Additionally, Mr. Carmody serves as conflict counsel pursuant to the Criminal Justice Act (CJA) in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania representing federal criminal defendants.

Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Carmody clerked in the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania for the Honorable Joseph I. Papalini in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  In Philadelphia, Mr. Carmody participated in the Volunteers for the Indigent Program (VIP), where he provided pro bono representation to indigent clients regarding the civil forfeiture of their real property.  He also spent both summers during law school working in Northeastern Pennsylvania, including an internship in the Pennsylvania Superior Court for the Honorable Correale F. Stevens.

A lifelong resident of Luzerne County, Mr. Carmody graduated from Roger Williams University School of Law in Bristol, Rhode Island in 2007.  While attending Roger Williams, Mr. Carmody participated in the law school’s Criminal Defense Clinic.  A 2004 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Mr. Carmody also spent his second year in law school working for the Big East Athletic Conference’s Department of Compliance and Governance.

Mr. Carmody is a member of the Luzerne County Law and Library Association, serving on the Executive Board from 2010-2012, and a member of the Federal Bar Association.  He is also a 2013 graduate of Leadership Wilkes-Barre.

Mr. Carmody is admitted to practice in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

In 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, Mr. Carmody was recognized for his accomplishments by being selected to the Pennsylvania Rising Stars list.  Each year, no more than 2.5 percent of the lawyers in the state are selected by the research team at Super Lawyers to receive this honor
