After-Accident Checklist
Tick off each step as you go
Your progress is saved on this device only. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else. Use the print button to keep a paper copy in your glove box.
This checklist is general information, not legal advice, and does not create an attorney-client relationship. Every situation is different. Always put safety and medical care first.
The hours and days after an accident are confusing, and the things that matter most for your health and any future claim are easy to forget. This checklist puts them in one place. You can tick items off on your phone as you go, or print it and keep it in your glove box.
Why each step matters
The police report and photos. These are often the strongest evidence of what happened. Insurance companies rely on them heavily. See How to Get a Crash Report in Pennsylvania.
Seeing a doctor early. Many injuries, including concussions, whiplash and disc injuries, don't show up right away. A visit soon after the crash protects your health and creates a record that ties the injury to the accident. See Delayed Symptoms After an Accident and Should You Go to the ER After a Minor Accident?
Calling your own insurer. In Pennsylvania, your own auto policy usually pays your medical bills first, so you need to open a claim. See Who Pays Your Medical Bills? and Recorded Statements to Your Own Insurance Company.
Keeping records. Bills, receipts, pay stubs and a simple pain journal are how you show what the accident actually cost you. See Lost Wages After an Accident and How Pain and Suffering Is Valued.
Protecting the claim. What you post, sign and say can be used later. See Talking to Insurance Adjusters, Social Media and Surveillance and Should You Accept the First Settlement Offer?
The deadline. Most Pennsylvania injury claims must be filed within two years, and claims involving a government agency can require notice within six months. Use our Injury Deadline Calculator to see your approximate dates.
